Chesstacle is a puzzle game where players must decide which series of moves will put them in the best possible position to win from a starting position on a chessboard. The popular online word-guessing game Wordle served as the game's inspiration. In order to win at Chesstacle, you must correctly predict the best first move, the best reaction from your opponent, and your own winning move. The movements are written down using algebraic notation, a common chess notation system that uses letters and numbers to represent the locations of the pieces on the board. The game gives feedback after each guess by altering the color of the tiles on the board. A piece is in the right place if it is on the right rank or file and in the right square if it is on the yellow or red tiles, respectively. If it is not on the right rank or file, it is indicated by a red tile.
Checks and mates are absent from Chesstacle, and the game makes no mention of whether a move results in a checkmate or not. Instead of making tactical calculations, the emphasis is on determining the best order of moves to take in order to achieve a winning position.
